As a part of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Music Higher Level Year 2 course, I investigated musical links between two different musical cultures of Korea and Vietnam. Here, you will learn about traditional court music from South Korea and Vietnam. As a Korean American student, I was always interested in learning about Korean traditional music. This was an opportunity for me to explore those distinguishing characteristics of traditional court music as it was played in the court for national events.
The two examples that I will be introducing here is an excerpt of "Somu" from Korean Jongmyo jereyeak and "Nu tuong xuat quan" from Vietnamese Nha Nhac. The musical links that I will be exploring from these two pieces are the use of melodic contour in theme development, the rhythmic patterns, and the use of ornamentation. Even though these cultures have a different language, customs and histories, a several common musical links were present in both.
The purpose of this website is to allow the readers to explore the musical links between the two different cultures. In addition to reading the analysis, I hope you enjoy other interactive resources including, additional links and videos to have a glimpse of traditional music of these two different cultures.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
